Dan & Sue's Love Story Begins...

(from Sue's perspective) While were both attending Biola University (in Southern California) in the early 1980's, and both majoring in Christian Education, Dan & I had a couple of classes together. However, it was just somewhere on campus that Dan saw this auburn-headed girl with large, tortoise-shell glasses (it was the 80's) and decided he wanted to take her on a date. He asked around and found a friend of his who thought he knew me. This "friend" told Dan "she'll never go out with you!" (Some friend!)

Interested, but slightly discouraged, he and his friends kept an eye on me around campus. That semester we both were in a class of Dr. Harlan Confer, in fact, we sat just two seats away from each other. He still kept his distance, though.
Outside of class, Dan was fortunate enough to be regularly spending time with Dr. Confer, who also "happened" to be my advisor. Dan mentioned to Dr. Confer his interest in me, and Dr. Confer encouraged him to talk to me. It wasn't, however, until December that our professor finally intervened, realizing that he would have to give Dan a little help, instead of just encouragement.

After our first date, we first saw each other again at the bookstore while getting books for that semester's classes. He offered to loan me one of the books for a class he had already taken; I knew he was feeling the same when his book showed up at my dorm beautifully gift-wrapped. Berkhof's "Systematic Theology" will always have a special place in my heart! LOL

A group lab project was our last class assignment of the semester. The professor assigned four or five people in the class as leaders, myself being one of them, then told the class to gather in groups of five to seven.  At this, he grabbed Dan's arm, told him to hang back a second, then sent him directly to my group. By the time Dan arrived in my group, all other assignments had been passed out, but there was one project left and he & I were the only ones left to do it!
Working together on our project required us to spend a nice amount of time, and found that we really enjoyed each other's company enough to keep us up talking into the wee hours of the night. Dan and I went on our first date on December 18, 1983 to see "A Christmas Story". I was hooked---he was the kindest, sweetest, and most sincere guys I ever met. We were both amazed at what we had in common in our lives. But, it was his strong, godly character, tenderness, and his humor that swept me off my feet.

By the way, the class we met in was "Foundations of Interpersonal Relationships". Thank you, Dr. Confer!
